SL70 K0 #4

Light Ruby Red

This bike started out as a Light Ruby Red and
was purchased from the original owner. He was in his 70’s
and had owned three Honda dealerships. Over the years,
every time Honda came out with a bike he liked, he assembled
one and put it back. He did this to an SL70 along with
about 70 other bikes. I found this through some deep
research and managed to buy it just as he was coming to the
decision to part out his collection. He told me that it had
only been moved from dealership to museum to storage and
around a bit and that it really hadn’t ever been ridden. I
agreed to a price, which I thought was high, but figured
that I was buying one the most original and untouched bikes
around. We arranged shipping and when the bike arrived, it
was a bit of a surprise. The left hand side point cover had
been replaced with a later model cover, and the seat was
smooth as a whistle and was an NOS item from an XL70. The
exhaust baffle was missing and the owner had scratched the
front fender while loading the bike for shipping. It
wouldn’t start and it was pretty obvious that the carburetor
was full of sludge as it stunk really badly of old gas.
Even with all this, the bike really did look like it had
hardly been ridden. The Trail Wing tires still looked
pretty new.
I put the bike up for a bit and finally
decided that the bike deserved a restoration. The pictures
following will show that it went down to the frame and it
turned out really nice. After rebuilding the carburetor and
assembled, it started on the first kick. The engine is
in fantastic shape and the bike runs and drives nicely.
I started the restoration on this bike and was going to make
it Aquarius Blue, but because of the originality of it, I
went back Light Ruby Red after having the original tank
repainted around the original badges. Therefore, some
of the pictures from the restoration are in 'blue'.
I'm working on
reproducing the SL70 Tank Badges. If you are
interested in some, please let me know.
